Raku Taster – 13th September 2026
A fabulous class today with one group consisting of 3 generations. Everyone arrived well on time, and we started with a nice cuppa before learning about the history of ceramics…
The weekend had arrived and we were all looking forward to John Scott’s visit from Northumberland. It was a one-day course focusing on Copper Matt Lustre and Saggar firing and we had 7 students for each day. Mostly everyone had been making pots to bring along for firing, but a couple needed pots from John or RakuMania.
The morning started off with a cuppa tea, safety talk, and a brief outline of what was being covered. On the Saturday we started with preparing the pots for the saggar firing and then moved onto the Matt Lustre and on the Sunday, we swapped it around and started with the Matt Lustre, so John could get on with the firing. John mainly focused on his speciality, the Matt Lustre, whilst Adrian & Karen helped the students with preparing their saggars. This course we stuck to only doing foil saggars and the various combination of chlorides, oxides, and carbonate with a host of other interesting things – banana leaves, salt-soaked string, copper wire, wire wool, seaweed gave us some fabulous finishes.
John as usual, achieved some stunning results with the Matt Lustre and all the students were very happy.
There was definitely a divide between those that preferred the Matt Lustre and those that preferred the Saggar pots. All in all, it was a very successful day, and everyone went home very happy with their creations.
