One of our favourite classes is when Jane brings some of her pottery students for a hybrid version of our taster experience. This session is different in that the students get one pot from us but bring along their own creations they have been making in their pottery class. As there would be quite a few things to fire, we started a little earlier with our customary cuppa and housekeeping / safety talk. All the students besides Debroah had been before so we decided they did not need the talk about Raku, its history and how it came to the UK. Everyone got stuck into glazing and decorating their creations – all fabulous hand-built items. Today was definitely animal day as we had horses, sheep, owl, badger, hares, mole, fish, chicken and hedgehogs. In addition to this, Welsh ladies, Welsh miners, little ghosts and an angel.
Karen helped the students with their decorating whilst Adrian set up the kiln and all the firing equipment. We did not waste any time in getting the kiln going as we knew we would be doing a few more firings than usual. All the students chose to do a horse hair / feather firing with the RakuMania pots they got from us. This technique is great as the student “decorate” the pots whilst still at about 700 Celsius.
There were a lot of pots to fire, but we managed to get through them all besides a couple I fired the next day for Ann. We were really impressed with the results and the great hand building skills. In the firing process we only lost one hares ear 😊, all the rest did well in the firing and reduction process.
Jane is bringing another group in September – and we can’t wait to see what they bring along to Raku glaze and fire.
