The sun was shining, gazebo all set up with the kiln, kettle on and now we just need some students. Today, Angela who is already a RakuManiac and a pottery teacher herself, was bringing 6 of her students for the Raku experience. Great excitement as everyone arrived and had a brew to start the day off. Here at RakuMania we have a stocked fridge and lots of snacks for our students to help themselves to during the day.
After the obligatory introductory and safety talk, Adrian gave the class a brief history of Raku and how it ended up in the UK. Karen then showed the class a number of pots had been made by the RakuMania team to give them some ideas of how they might like to decorate their pots. With the taster experience, each student gets to choose two bisqued pots from selection we have and the option to purchase more at a nominal fee. The Raku Workshops we run are different in that students bring pots they have made themselves.
Out came the glazes, brushes, marking tape, wax resist and the new RakuManiacs went to town decorating their pots. All of them chose a Naked Raku method to do and don’t worry we all kept our clothes on. We have been getting some stunning results with the Naked Raku and this class was no exception. Everyone managed to prepare their pots before having their packed lunch. After lunch we fired up the kiln and managed to fit in four firings. The students were taught how to clean, seal and polish the pots that needed polishing.
The overall results were fabulous, and everyone went home very happy with their new Raku pots and we added another 6 RakuManiacs to our family.
