Its weekend, so time to do some Raku. Our new group of 7 students (including Adrian’s step daughter) all arrived on time ready to have some run and learn about Raku and the Raku process. We started with the customary cuppa tea / coffee and some general introductions. Most of the students had played with clay at some stage but none had any experience with Raku. Our taster sessions are geared around those that have either done some pottery or have no experience at all. Before you ask, you don’t need to be very artistic either 😊
After some housekeeping matters and a safety briefing, Adrian got straight into the history of Raku and how it came to the UK. He explained what we have in the Western world is very different from true Japanese Raku. Karen then showed the students the various Raku styles / techniques they would be able to try, and they all chose a couple of pots from our selection of bisqued pots.
With plenty of time till lunch, the class set about decorating their pots under the watchful eye and assistance of Karen. With all the pots decorated / glazed and sorted into the firing groups, the students took a break to eat their packed lunches. During lunch, Adrian got the kiln and equipment ready for firing. After lunch we fired up the kiln and had 3 fabulous firings with some great results. The students were shown how to clean off their pots and where necessary, seal and polish them.
