It was fabulous to welcome Jane back with her pottery students and to see a couple of old RakuManiacs and some new recruits. Whilst all our students are celebrities, this workshop did see Lenny from the Channel 4 program “The Dog House” join us. Morning tea and coffee was served and after the usual safety talk and brief history of Raku, everyone revealed their pots and creations they had made to fire. We had Welsh miners, a large hare, angels, a few lovely coiled pots, a witch, an elephant book stand and a few other nice little pieces. In addition to this, everyone got one of the RakuMania bisqued pots to decorate.
Karen and Adrian then showed the students a number of different ways to decorate and glaze the creations ready to be fired. Out came the decorating tape, underglazes, glazes, wax resist, brushes and everyone got creative. We did one firing over lunch and it was a lovely sunny day, so we all sat outside to eat and another 4 firings after lunch. As it was a workshop, students are invited to get as involved as they would like. We had one miners head come off whilst Jane was getting him out the kiln but did fairly well with everything else. Many of the students opted for Adrian to get their creations out the kiln and we had some wonderful results. All the glazes worked very well, and everyone had a go at doing the horsehair / feather technique. The naked Raku also provided some stunning pots with Karen’s guidance on how to seal and polish the pots.
All, the participants were over the moon with the final finish of their creations and Adrian got the nick name “The Kin God” and Karen is still “The Burnishing Queen”.
It was really a fabulous day and Jane is back on Saturday with a new bunch of RakuManiacs😊
