Hi, I’m Cara! For my 40th birthday, my wonderful friend, Leni treated me to something truly special—a day at Raku Mania in West Wales. It turned out to be one of the most exciting and unforgettable experiences I’ve had!
We started our day with a friendly and reassuring safety briefing from Adrian, which put everyone at ease. Then Karen, took us through the three Raku firing options, sparking our creativity as we imagined the possibilities for our pots. With both Adrian and Karen by our sides, we eagerly started glazing process, experimenting with colours and techniques. It was so nice to have their guidance every step of the way!
The real fun began after lunch, when it was time to fire our creations in the kiln. The atmosphere was electric as we gathered around the fiery action. Poor Gill had a bit of a mishap with her fire, but Adrian, the ‘Kiln God,’ stepped in and saved the day with a quick second attempt. Richard wowed everyone with an Asian-inspired glaze that even brought Adrian to tears—truly a masterpiece in the making!
As for my pot, well, not everything went as planned. A bit of glaze chipped off, but instead of ruining it, it actually gave my piece a unique look that I ended up loving. That’s the beauty of Raku—every outcome is a surprise!
The anticipation of seeing how our pots would turn out added a layer of excitement to the day, making the entire experience so enjoyable. We made great friends with the other raku enthusiasts, and I’m already thinking about bringing more friends along for another session in the future.
If you’ve ever considered trying Raku pottery, I can’t recommend this experience enough. It was the perfect birthday treat, and I couldn’t have asked for a more memorable day!
