Raku Taster – 28th July

It’s Monday morning and time for a new group of RakuManiac students. In class of lovely students today which had a mixed group with regards to pottery experience, but that’s fine as for our taster experiences you need no experience at all. Everyone arrived on time, and we all enjoyed a cuppa whilst Adrian & Karen introduced themselves and everyone got a chance to say who they were and any experience they had.  Safey is important to RakuMania, so everyone was given a basic safety briefing as we would be playing with temperatures in excess of 1000c, naked flames and lots of smoke. Students are then showed the stocked fridge with lots of delicious goodies on top. Our course fees include refreshments throughout the day 😊 but they bring along their own packed lunch.

Adrian gave his usual history of Raku talk and how Raku got to the UK. Karen then bought out lots of different Raku fired pots, and the students were told how to achieve each of the effects. With their heads buzzing with ideas, everyone chose 2 pre-bisqued pots (included in the price) from the selection we have. There is also an option to buy a third pot and many of the students did this.

All the dipping glazes were thoroughly mixed by Karen and Adrian took out a selection of bought glazes from the very stocked glaze cupboard. All the students then got busy decorating and glazing their pots. The class was one of the more quieter ones we have had but that did not affect the fabulous pots they made. After lunch, Adrian fired up the kilns and showed the students the firing process.   After the pots come out the kiln and have been in the reduction chamber and cooled, Karen showed everyone how to clean, seal and where necessary, polish their pots.

The final products were fabulous, and everyone went home very happy with their creations. A new group of RakuManiacs let loose on the world and we hope some will come back for another day.
